Storm Front Sunset II

Storm Front Sunset II

Nervous that the approaching storm would damage my equipment, I almost missed this incredible shot.

Shooting Location

Located just north of Nashville Tennessee is Old Hickory Lake, a photographer’s paradise. Drive north from Nashville and then east from Hendersonville on Highway 31E into Gallatin. Just before the intersection with Highway 109, turn south onto Lock 4 road. Follow this road about 3.5 miles to Lock 4 Park.

The park offers some great picnic spots, a fishing pier, awesome bike trails, and incredible photo opportunities. Early mornings and late evenings you are sure to see several deer feeding along the edge of the road and out into the open meadows.

Park near the fishing pier and walk back up the road toward the park entrance. Watch for the first bike trail on your left. Follow this trail a few hundred feet as it winds around the lake shore. Just as the the bike trial turns right, away from the lake, push through the underbrush to the edge of the lake and you’ll find the spot where I captured this awesome sunset view above.

Setting Up For This Shot

After hiking into this location, I initially thought it was a wasted trip for sunset photographs. The dark storm clouds from the cold front moving into our area threatened to hide the sunset and all the wonderful colors. I waited and watched (anxiously), trying judge the strength and speed of the approaching storm. I hurriedly snapped off a few shots (just in case) while mentally planning and preparing for a hasty retreat back to the shelter of my truck.

The main front moved south of the setting sun with just enough clouds spreading north to prepare this awesome combination of clouds, sky, red, orange, and a mix of other colors. I captured some awesome sunset photographs as the sun highlighted the bottoms of these clouds.

Magic Time!

Then – MAGIC! The storm clouds to the south thinned just enough for the sun to press through, forcing these different hues of red into the picture. Constantly changing, the storm front spread over Old Hickory Lake to create the awesome Storm Front Sunset photograph I captured above. I hope you enjoy.
